In the middle of winter, when days are long and cold, communities are coming together to bring some brightness to their neighbours.

This weekend, the Coniston Community Action Network is hosting Winterfest, and the Eyre Playground Association is hosting its day-long winter carnival.

Both groups have something to help families stay warm and enjoy themselves in the outdoors.

Winterfest Weekend

The Coniston Community Action Network (CAN) and the Coniston Minor Hockey Association have joined forces to bring back Winterfest.

Festivities kick off Feb. 10 with a hockey tournament. In the evening, families are invited to skate under the stars, enjoy snacks and beverages and horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Activities continue throughout the weekend with Valentine's Day cookie decorating, family exercises, snowshoe golf, skate races and dog-sled rides.

Sunday kicks off with a pancake breakfast, hockey finals, curling demonstrations and a Valentine's Day dinner.

For more information about the festival, phone 705-694-3337.

Eyre Playground

The Eyre Playground Association is continuing to raise funds for its Minnow Lake playground. In the near future, the group is planning to install a basketball court. To help make it a reality, the group is having a barbecue, games, raffles and a penny and bake sale. Neighbourhood volunteers are responsible for putting on the second annual event.

The young neighbourhood is hoping to draw awareness to its community park.

“A lot of people don't know there is a park here,” Carrie Lemay, one of the volunteers, said.
