Isabel Stocker has had a “very vibrant and colourful life,” with plenty more to come.

The Sudburian, who became the 27th nationality living in the city when she came here in 1959, recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

Hailing from Colima, Mexico, Isabel worked as a belly dancer and aesthetician. She met her husband who was an optometrist while he was visiting Mexico, and returned to Canada with him.

While in Sudbury, Isabel taught ballroom dancing and worked at Bonneville Hairstyling. Even in her senior years, she continues to stay heavily involved; She begins every day with exercises at 7 a.m., and regularly participates in craft shows.

“She really made a life for herself here in Sudbury,” Karin Stocker, her one and only daughter, said. “She made an imprint.”

While she became embraced in Sudbury life, Karin said her mom has always been reflective of her roots.

“She's vibrant (like) my culture,” she said while speaking to a crowd of family and friends who gathered to celebrate her milestone birthday, held July 2.

For those who couldn't make it to the actual celebration, a video featuring their birthday wishes was presented to Isabel.

“We brought Mexico to her,” Karin said.
