Playing with chalk is nothing new for Julie Courtemanche.

“I'm a mother and an art teacher,” she said with a laugh.

Courtemanche was one of many “artists” who let her creative side shine at Artists on Elgin's Chalk-A-Doodle day, held July 7 in downtown Sudbury. The ground was covered in sidewalk chalk sketches, completed by anyone interested in participating.

“I thought the idea was really cool,” Courtemanche said. “The concept is (about) making art accessible to everyone.”

Paddy O'Sullivan, an artist who works with Artists on Elgin, said the idea of the event was to engage the community in a fun, creative way.

“It's something everybody can do,” he said. All you need, according to the abstract artist, is “just the desire to create.”

Courtemanche said that's why the idea of doodling with chalk was so appealing to her.

“It just brings you back to being a kid,” she said.
