How about three dinners, and three shows?
Once again, Theatre Cambrian is staging the North's only dinner theatre festival. Running the weekends of Jan. 11 and Jan. 18, the festival features three shows that have never been performed by Theatre Cambrian.
The festival features a trio of Canadian comedies, including Here on the Flight Path and Bedtime Stories by Norm Foster and Amazing Gracie by the late Warren Graves. The Jan. 11 and 12 shows are both presented as evening features complete with a dinner buffet spread, and the Jan. 13 show is a matinee featuring a “grand” lunch.
Here on the Flight Path is about one man's interactions with three women over the course of three years, on a balcony outside. Bedtime Stories is comprised of six scenes, all revolving around a bed.
In the end, each of the stories ends up interconnecting. In Amazing Gracie, an elderly couple is visited by the spirits of Adam and Eve, who help them restore their relationship.
The shows feature “a whole lot of comedy, and some touching moments as well,” according to Jeff Burton.
Theatre Cambrian's volunteer co-ordinator said this is the first time all three productions staged during the dinner theatre festival are new.
In the past, the theatre brought back shows from recent years for weekend events. While it was challenging to pull together three shows to present the same weekend, along with three set changes, the undertaking was worthwhile.
“It's definitely going to pay off,” Burton said. “It will be a great treat for our regular audiences.”
Along with new shows, there are a number of new faces lined up to make their mainstage debut during the festival.
“They learn the lines faster than most of us,” Burton said with a laugh.
Tickets to the festival are still available. Those interested in catching only one of the three productions can purchase a single show ticket for $55. Festival packages, which allow the theatre-goer to alternate which show they see which weekend, can be purchased for $145.
“It's a great theatre getaway,” Burton said.
