The Kinsmen Club of Sudbury 29th Showcase Sweepstakes presented $130,000 to the community last night.

Seventeen local organizations, “the fortunate ones,” were presented with cash from funds raised by the club's annual house draw.

Gerry Rogerson, a life member and house chairman, said funds were distributed to groups who help make the community a better place, and donate their time to helping run open houses at the sweepstakes house.

Mike Allard, director of the House of Kin, said his group greatly appreciates the annual influx of funding. In 2012 alone, the organization subsidized 7,200 nights of accommodations for families travelling to Sudbury to receive medical care — thanks to the money provided by the Kinsmen.

“We literally call it a home away from home,” Allard said.

Other funding recipients include Alzheimer Society, Arthritis Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Blue Door Soup Kitchen, Cinéfest Sudbury,- Down Syndrome Association, Inner City Home of Sudbury, Joe MacDonald Youth Football League, Meals of Wheels, Rockhaven, Sam Bruno Fund, Scouts Canada, Camp Wilabosca, Special Olympics Ontario – Sudbury, Student Nutrition Program, Sudbury Theatre Centre and YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

Organizations interested in applying for funding generated from the 2013 draw are now welcome to submit an application for consideration.
