If Laura Graham was mayor, she would address the potholes covering city streets, create more recreational facilities and ensure there were more things for young people to do.

The Grade 10 student from Lasalle Secondary School had the chance to see what it was like to be in charge of the city Feb. 7, when she was elected Mayor for the Day.

“Young people have so much to offer their community, in terms of energy and vision,” said Mayor Marianne Matichuk. In the fall, Matichuk announced a contest for Grade 10 students across the city, inviting them to explain what they'd do if they were in her seat.

“In 25 years, they will be leaders in this community,” she said. “I would like to see young people start thinking about community issues now, to imagine the kind of city they want to live in and then share it with us.”

Graham created a video, which was voted best of the class by her classmates. In an informal “election,” her application was submitted for the contest, where it was selected by Matichuk.

According to the mayor's office, Graham's video stood out because of its vision.
“We need people's input to move this city forward, especially young people,” she said.

Graham had the chance to live a day in the life of the mayor on a particularly exciting day. Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci announced his retirement when Graham was in house.

“You have to be flexible in politics,” Matichuk said.

Another highlight of Graham's day included reading a proclamation declaring her Mayor for the Day, signed by Matichuk right before her.

The young student said she was interested in seeing what it was like to be mayor — that's why she participated. Graham, who is in charge of intramurals through the Lasalle Athletic Council, said she is interested in pursuing an career in sports or medicine.
