There's no question summer camp can change lives.

The fresh air, new experiences and forming friendships intertwine together to build memories that last a lifetime.

For the kids at Camp Quality, one week away from their usual routine of hospital visits and cancer treatments is powerful enough to have them come back year after year, fondly recalling the opportunity for a lifetime.

“It's a real camp experience," said Theresa Pagnutti, media and fundraising co-ordinator for Camp Quality Northern Ontario. “This is a week they can be kids. They're here to have fun.”

Kids aged three to 18 are invited to take in the camp experience, engaging in all sorts of traditional camp activities, as well as some less common camp adventures, like bush plane rides.

Parents of children with cancer can breathe easier knowing their young ones will have constant one-on-one attention from a trained supervisor — someone who often becomes a friend, according to Pagnutti.

“They become quite close,” she said.

Parents can also rest assured their children will be taken care of physically, thanks to nurses who are ready to provide medical care to anyone who needs it.

Camp Quality Northern Ontario has been around for about 22 years. Located on the west arm of Lake Nipissing in Monetville, the camp operates with a full staff to make everything the best it can be for the kids.

“It's such a wonderful thing,” Pagnutti said. “These kids can be kids. They don't have to worry about anything.”

Volunteers, like Pagnutti, enjoy the experience, too.

“It's the most fun,” she said. “I look forward to it as much as the kids.”

This year, camp week runs July 7-12.

Training is slated for June 7-8.

Anyone interesting in volunteering for camp is invited to submit an application through campquality.com or by phoning 1-800-899-3380.

Parents of children with cancer are invited to visit the website too to learn more about having their children participate in camp.
