The Francophone music series La Slague — named after the substance that's the quintessentially Sudbury byproduct of hard rock mining — was first created more than 50 years ago.

It ceased operations for a time in the 1990s and the early part of this century, before being resurrected in 2006.

Since that time, it's been crucial to the development of Sudbury's Francophone music scene, said La Slague's communications co-ordinator, Francois Girard.

“What the artists have done since then is really amazing,” he said.

“We've had the chance to showcase them. We accompany them through their development. But they're also putting on projects of their own. They're developing their own little series. They're playing pretty much everywhere in town.”

La Slague launched its 2014-2015 season June 24 at La Fromagerie.

Green-clad people — dressed up in honour of St. Jean Bapiste Day — showed up to learn about the La Slague lineup, as well as to listen to a concert by local musicians Dayv Poulin and Stef Paquette.

Poulin and Paquette, coincidentally, will be among the musicians featured in this year's La Slague series.

While local musicians feature heavily on the bill, the series also showcases out-of-town artists such as Quebec country musician Patrick Norman and Quebec jazz group Benoit Paradis Trio.

Other performers include Hay Babies and Soeurs Boulay, Michel Rivard and Mystery Performer. La Nuit Emergente, an evening featuring emerging musicians, will take place in March.
