YES Theatre presents Jesus Christ Superstar at the Sudbury Theatre Centre this July

Celebrating its fifth-anniversary season of production, YES Theatre is bringing back Jesus Christ Superstar at the Sudbury Theatre Centre this July.

Back for its second consecutive year, the rock musical sold out its 2013 summer run and YES Theatre is expecting even more fun and spectacle this time round.

Director Alessandro Costantini revealed a much deeper character understanding and artistic vision with having much of the same cast and crew as last year's production.

“(Actors) keep making new discoveries about their characters, or find deeper meaning this year, and this was expected with such a well written and developed script,” said Costantini.

And finding those new discoveries has been rewarding for the cast who revel in the music and lyrics of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Tessa Gooden, who plays Mary Magdalene, said the musical speaks to all ages. Many in the audience have grow up listening to the album, have heard the songs blasted through the radio, or even owned the original score on vinyl. Watching everyone sing along has been a real treat, Gooden said.

Jesus Christ Superstar, which made its debut in the late '60s, continues to be a radical rock musical whose biblical parallels have only spurred popularity. YES Theatre has further adapted the production in order to include a female character to play the title role of Judas. Costantini was reluctant to give away any surprises, but promises a fantastic performance from Jessica Crowe.

Jesus Christ Superstar hits the stage at Sudbury Theatre Centre July 4-19. Ticket prices for students/seniors are $25, and $28.50 for adults. Tickets may be purchased from the Sudbury Theatre Centre Box Office by calling 705-674-8381 or online at www.yestheatre.com.
