Kathy Browning: Island 'is just incredibly beautiful'

Kathy Browning aims to inspire with an exhibition of her photos of Ireland on display at Artists on Elgin throughout the month of July.

“Perhaps if they've been there it brings back memories, and if not, perhaps it will help them to get out there and travel and go to Ireland and see this amazing country, because it just is incredibly beautiful,” she said.

The exhibition, entitled “Ireland,” came about after Browning visited the island for two weeks three years ago, taking 4,600 photographs.

Some of the photos in the exhibition depict famous sites, including Blarney Castle.

But Browning also attempted to convey Ireland's essence through street art referring to the “Troubles” (the conflict between Catholics and Protestants), vividly-painted fishing boats and the nation's beautiful roses.

Many of her photos also aim to show just how green the country is. “The colour of the green was so intense it's almost like it's jumping up off of the ground,” Browning said.

The professor of visual arts at Laurentian's school of education said she's been been a photographer for 45 years.

She used to do a lot of black and white photography, and said these skills have influenced the way she takes digital photographs now.

“I'm a better photographer I think, for having gone through black and white, because I really look at the relationship between people and objects,” Browning said.

“Sometimes if you just start off with digital photography straight, you get a little too caught up in all the colour.”

Artists on Elgin is located at 168 Elgin St., and is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.artistsonelgin.ca.
