Art of Alix Voz on display at Science North

If you're planning an imminent visit to Science North, take a few minutes to check out the artwork hanging in the science centre's sunwalk.

The paintings are the work of 23-year-old Sudbury native Alix Voz, and feature abstract interpretations of her travel experiences. The exhibit, entitled Beyond My Northern Borders, was unveiled last month, and will be up until July 14.

“My paintings are inspired by my travel experiences beyond the borders of Northern Ontario, by my work as an Au Pair in Istanbul, and by the beautiful architecture and natural elements I encounter wherever I travel,” Voz said, in a press release.

Beyond My Northern Borders is part of the Emerging Artists program put on through a partnership between Science North and Artists on Elgin.

The program, which started last year, gives artists under the age of 30 a chance to have their work exhibited and “get their name out there,” said Artists on Elgin business promotions co-ordinator Courtney Natale.

Normally the work of several artists are displayed at the same time, she said. Voz is the first artist to have an entire Emerging Artists exhibit to herself.

It's no wonder — Voz's work is “phenomenal,” Natale said. “I think that with her calibre and talent, she's going to go far,” she said.

All of the paintings on display are available for purchase.

Exhibiting the work of young artists fits in well with Science North's mission, which is inspiring young audiences, said Amy Henson, a staff scientist at the science centre.

“This type of partnership, where we have young artists come and display their work is just right up our alley for what we do,” she said.

The next Emerging Artists exhibit will be in September.
