One lucky Northern Ontario musician or band is set to get a helping hand with their career thanks to a program being put on in partnership between Music and Film in Motion and the Canadian Independent Recording Artists' Association.

Simon Walker of the Toronto-based country-folk/indie rock band The Wooden Sky will offer his services as a mentor to the selected artist.

He'll spend 15 hours over three months this fall with the successful applicant.
As for what topics Walker will cover, it could be anything from touring to writing to recording to negotiating contracts, said Music and Film in Motion music outreach officer Jen McKerral.

On Sept. 18, the selected artist will also have a chance to open for The Wooden Sky at a Northern Ontario Music Showcase at the Townehouse Tavern.

“The Wooden Sky and Simon will have a chance to kind of observe that artist performing and be able to provide feedback on that side of things, which is really important as well,” McKerral said.

She said it's great Walker has agreed to take the time to participate in the program, especially as The Wooden Sky is preparing for the launch of its third album album, “Let's Be Ready,” in September.

“That's always a really busy time for an artist,” McKerral said. “He's taking 15 hours over three months to hang out with an artist from Northern Ontario. That's pretty generous. I think it's really cool.”
