Sea Perry member Shawn Fisher said the Sudbury folk-rock band's nomination in the “best folk” category for the Toronto Independent Music Awards came as a complete surprise.

“Music and Film and Motion, they tweeted 'congratulations to Sea Perry for their nomination,'” he said. “I was like 'What the hell are they talking about?' I went and checked it out. I was like 'Oh, well that's pretty cool.'”

Fisher said he's not sure how Sea Perry — which besides himself, is made up of Chris Milligan and Chad Bouchard — came to receive the nomination, but guesses it's because they often play gigs in the Toronto area.

“To get recognition for something you're doing creatively, it's fulfilling,” he said. “It feels good. It kind of reinforces that maybe we're doing the right thing. It just makes us want to work harder, really.”

The band finds out Sept. 25 whether or not they won the award. To learn more about Sea Perry, visit www.seaperry.com.
