The latest exhibit at the Art Gallery of Sudbury has a rather unusual subject — tattoos.

Canadian artist Aba Bayefsky created large-scale paintings of tattooed Japanese and Canadian models in the 1970s and 1980s.

“Bayefsky was one of Canada’s most renowned figurative artists who represented the human figure in many different ways, including through these incredibly beautiful interpretations of tattooed men and women,” said Art Gallery of Sudbury deputy director and curator Tom Smart, in a press release.

Bayefsky, who died in 2001, was one of Canada’s most distinguished artists, the press release said.

He was appointed an Official War Artist in 1944, assigned to depict airborne operations over North-West Europe. The nearly 50 works completed on this assignment form part of the art collection at the Canadian Art Museum in Ottawa.

A Member of the Order of Canada, Bayefsky is a former president of the Canadian Group of Painters, the Canadian Society of Graphic Art, and was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy.

The exhibit is on display until Nov. 3.

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is located at 251 John Street. It's open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.artsudbury.org, or phone 705-675-4871.
