Sudbury's Shaft Bottom Boys will rock the Lockerby branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Nov. 8 as part of a fundraiser to bring a statue of the late Stompin' Tom Connors to the city's downtown.
The Saturday Night Rocks event, which begins at 7 p.m., features music, dancing, refreshments, prizes and a silent auction.
A press release said the event “is a tip-of-the-hat to Connors, and to the mining community he sang about in his romping 'Sudbury Saturday Night.'”
Known for supporting community initiatives, the popular Shaft Bottom Boys are donating their time and talent to Saturday Night Rocks.
"The commemorative project is timely, and a great thing for the community,” said the band's drummer, Fuller Industrial Corp. president Jeff Fuller.
“It was our Stompin’ Tom heritage that got the Shaft Bottom Boys started, and he’s always a part of our show.”
Sudbury artist Tyler Fauvelle , who sculpted the statue, said the life-sized bronze will be installed in Downtown Sudbury in July 2015, during the Northern Lights Festival Boreal.
“Tom Connors, who passed away last year, strongly supported Canadian culture, and I’m glad we’re unveiling the bronze during Canada’s longest-running folk festival,” said Fauvelle. “Until then, a stompin’ night of fun is a great way for friends and fans of Stompin’ Tom to help the project along.”
Tickets for Saturday Night Rocks are $20, and are available at the door.
