In a new initiative, Sudbury Theatre Centre's artistic director is inviting local writers (emerging or established) to submit original works for consideration as STC Opening Acts to the 2015-2016 Mainstage Season.

These short plays will be professionally produced as a lead in to the mainstage performances throughout the season.

The initiative is part of STC’s ongoing mandate of supporting and developing new local work and writers while celebrating stories unique to the community and surrounding region.

Marshall, who started his job with STC in September, successfully pioneered the Opening Acts concept at Theatre New Brunswick while he was artistic producer.

J. Kelly Nestruck, theatre critic for The Globe and Mail, called the initiative "another clever idea other regionals with an over-reliance on American classics might consider adopting.”

Northern Ontario has a rich and diverse history full of stories waiting to be told and brought to life on stage, a press release from STC said.

They may be tales from our past or present, but they must be based on true events. Submissions may incorporate intimate and domestic themes, or subjects large in historic scope.

Selected works will receive dramaturgy and further development in association with Pat the Dog Theatre Creation prior to production.

"We encourage playwrights to submit works that both celebrate our triumphs as a community, as well as reflect on our challenges. New plays at all stages of development will be considered."

Plays must be 10-12 minutes long, require two to four actors and have a Northern Ontario theme. The deadline for submission is Jan. 13.

Email a script submission (PDF or Word) along with a cover letter including a short playwright bio, background on the script, and any prior development history to [email protected].

Please indicate “Opening Acts” in the subject line.
