Sharpen your aim, stretch your arm and crack a cold one. Northern Lights Festival Boreal has come up with a new way to help raise funds for its summer celebration of roots music — beer pong.

It might seem like an odd event for organizers to latch onto, but the executive director of NLFB said in the last few years, beer pong has evolved from a college dorm room drinking game into a test of skill and accuracy.

It even has its own world championships — and a $50,000 top prize — held in Las Vegas.

"It might seem a little wild for a Northern Lights fundraiser," Max Merrifield said in a news release. "But we saw the cult following this game had at our Oktoberfest event and we figured why not? It’s fun, it’s unique, and we think it’s going to be a big hit!”

Sudbury's Biggest Beer Pong Tournament will be held Nov. 28 at the Sudbury Events Centre (19 Regent St.). Other than qualifying for the international competition, organizers promise a selection of prizes, including prizes for best team costume, oldest team and many more.

For those not familiar with the game, beer pong is a party game that involves tossing a ping pong ball into a cup filled with water or beer. Professionally, the game is played as a game of skill, with cups of water, although beer is certainly served.

The winning Sudbury team will be flown to Las Vegas to compete for the $50,000 grand prize in the international World Series of Beer Pong.

“Some might not realize how insanely popular this beer pong thing has become,” event organizer Mark Varrin said in a news release. “We’ve already heard about teams coming in from other cities to compete, so we are challenging Sudburians to bring their A game.”

The Sudbury event is sanctioned by Bpong.com, the international authority on the game and presenters of the world series championship.

In order to register for the event, teams must sign up in advance at Sudburysbest.com, or in person at the NLFB Office (19 Grey St.).

Tickets to the event also include a complimentary Sudbury Transit ride and can also be purchased at Fromagerie Elgin, Gloria’s Convenience, Jett Landry Music, Walden Home Hardware and at the NLFB office, or on-line at sudburysbest.com or nlfbsudbury.com.

The event will kick off at 6 p.m. Nov. 28, with the competition beginning at roughly 9 p.m.
