Known for its “intricate rhythm arrangements, catchy woodwind and brass playing,” the Toronto-based group Drumhand will perform at The Townehouse starting at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 28.

Fusing the energy of New Orleans parade bands and the uplifting spirit of American Roots Music, Drumhand's new album, “Contretempts,” features original and worldly sounds.
'
“Contretemps literally means ‘an unfortunate and unexpected occurrence,’ which speaks to specific social conundrums decried in the lyric content of songs like 'No Rush' and 'Some Debts' (inspired by Margaret Atwood’s 2008 Massey Lecture Payback),” said bandleader/composer Larry Graves, in a press release.

“At the same time, it refers to the musical usage of the term (en français) for ‘offbeat,’ which relates to the rhythmic devices and interplay that appear on tracks such as 'Dead Reckoning' and 'Twenty-Four Seven.'”

This performance will mark the ensemble's first Sudbury appearance since the Northern Lights Festival Boreal in 2012.

Admission to the concert is $10 at the door.
