Electronic pow-wow extravaganza

Native pop music stars Inez Jasper and DJ Classic Roots will be performing in Sudbury Nov. 28 as part of a fundraiser for a camp focused on aboriginal culture.

The “Electronic Pow Wow Extravaganza” concert takes place at the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek Community Centre on the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation (Whitefish Lake First Nation) starting at 8 p.m.

There will be a free workshop at 5:30 P.M. on music and healthy lifestyles prior to the concert at the same location.

Jasper will also take part in a gala dinner and concert starting at 6 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Royal Canadian Legion on Long Lake Road.

Jasper is one of Canada’s top Aboriginal musicians, combining native sounds with contemporary pop music for performances that have won two Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards and nominations at the Junos and Western Canadian Music Awards.

A trained nurse, she also delights in delivering healthy lifestyles workshops for youth.

A native of Thunder Bay, Joshua DePerry, a.k.a. DJ Classic Roots is innovating unique electronica sounds inspired by the “sexy heartbeats of the boreal north,” and hoping that his own success will inspire First Nation youth to follow their dreams.

Camp Eagle Nest, located in Cartier, is a camp “focused on Aboriginal arts, culture, leadership and appreciation of nature.”

It is helping youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity to go to summer camp or learn from the wisdom and skills of elders who wish to pass on their knowledge.

Tickets to the Nov. 28 concert cost $15, and tickets to the gala cost $100, or $500 for a table of six.
