Poetry set to grace city's buses

It's all part of Greater Sudbury poet laureate Tom Leduc's Moving With Poetry project. He asked local poets for submissions of poetry about how they see the city to be displayed in vacant bus advertising slots.

Leduc said he received about 80 entries, and a panel of judges from the Greater Sudbury Public Library and the Sudbury Writers Guild selected a dozen poems to be featured.

Because there's not enough room for an entire poem in the advertising slots, only a few lines are being printed. Full versions of the poems will be published on the poet laureate's eZine, terranorth.ca.

The poems are quite diverse, some submitted by professional poets — including the city's first poet laureate Roger Nash — as well as by elementary school kids.

Subject matter includes taking the bus, ATVing, hockey moms, paddling and dealing with the snow.

“It's quite varied, and all of it's very good,” said Leduc, the city's poet laureate until the end of 2016. “I was very happy with the quality.”

The poetry should start appearing on city buses early in the New Year, Leduc said.
