Students at several local French Catholic schools will receive lessons in traditional square dancing Jan. 8 and 12.

The sessions will be led by local master fiddler Paul Lemelin and Jean-François Berthiaume, a Quebec-based traditional caller. He's in town to perform at the Festival of Traditions this weekend.

Kids from École Saint-Joseph (Espanola), École Jean-Paul II (Val Caron) Catholic Schools and École secondaire catholique Franco-Ouest (Espanola) will take part in the activity.

As a traditional caller, Berthiaume instructs dance participants while providing a traditional evening of entertainment.

As is the case for disc jockeys, successful callers must be able to read the mood of audiences and find the right rhythm to make them get up and dance.
