Sudbury Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is not only searching for a new music director, it's now also in the process of replacing its executive director.

Dawn Cattapan, who has been the symphony's executive director since late 2012, handed in her resignation recently. Her last day in the office was Jan. 16.

Victor Sawa, who has filled the position of music director since SSO's 1997-1998 season, is also moving on. He's announced this season will be his last with the symphony, as he plans to take on more work in Europe.

Cattapan said it's coincidental that she's leaving not long after Sawa gave his notice. She said she has plans to seek career opportunities in Hamilton, Ont.

Even with the impending departure of two senior staffers, Cattapan said the symphony's board of directors have things well in hand.

They've narrowed the field for music director down to four candidates. These candidates will then strut their stuff on stage during the 2015-2016 season as they compete for the job.

As for her old job, Cattapan said the position was already posted, and interviews will be conducted soon.

“The symphony is in this amazing place where it's such an opportunity for somebody,” she said.

“All these things are happening. Our subscriptions are up, our single tickets are up, we're doing really neat things and really innovative things, and people are taking note of us nationally and provincially.

“We're making a mark for ourselves. I think it's just a really exciting time to move on and let somebody else take the reins and see what they can do.”
