An evening of dramatic readings of new works by the Sudbury Theatre Centre emerging playwrights' group Playwrights' Junction takes place Feb. 9.

“Last Stop.” features short pieces and excerpts from plays by Sarah Gartshore, Mitchell Gauvin, Mathew Henry, Eric Lapalme, Nina Nesseth, Camil Rochon, and Abby Yzereef.

Hosted by STC playwright-in-residence Matthew Heiti and featuring local actors, “Last Stop.” offers the rare opportunity to experience works-in-progress by Sudbury writers developing their talents.

A figure prowls a burned mansion at night searching for clues, a young woman discovers her parents have made her the subject of a scientific study, a man drags his psychiatrist into his sexual misadventures, an overdose of caffeine is fuel for a break-up – these are just some of the exciting stories in an evening of both big laughs and high drama.

“Our fourth season of Playwrights’ Junction has seen an infusion of our community’s younger artists,” said Heiti. “It is a great indication that our city is full of up-and-coming talent.”

Playwrights’ Junction is a yearly STC initiative with the mandate to assist emerging local writers in developing new works. Current members have been meeting weekly since the fall, and “Last Stop.” is a culmination and celebration of their new work.

Previous alumni have gone on to have their plays professionally developed and produced.

STC artistic director Caleb Marshall considers programs like Playwrights’ Junction essential to the theatre's continued relevance.
“Part of the duty of a regional theatre is to support and engage local artists and their work,” said Marshall.

“The future of our industry rests on the development of the next generation of theatre artists and the creation of new work with regional voices and themes. Playwrights’ Junction, under Heiti’s leadership, has shown great success in supporting that mandate.”

Marshall hopes to build on that success with new programming initiatives including the introduction of STC Opening Acts, short original works by local playwrights which centre on local themes and stories. These pieces will be professionally produced and performed alongside STC’s upcoming 2015-2016 Mainstage Season.

Last Stop. will be presented in the Sudbury Theatre Centre auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9. Admission is pay-what-you-can with a $10 suggested minimum.
