What if you grew up in Toronto but your traditional Indian mother dragged you to India to find you a proper Indian wife?

Then, what if you turned that trip into a play and dragged your real-life mother up on stage to perform it with you? It is a recipe for the delicious Canadian hit “A Brimful of Asha,” created, directed and performed by Ravi Jain and co-starring his own mother, Asha Jain.

It comes to the Sudbury Theatre Centre for a limited engagement Feb. 24 to March 1.

First produced in 2007 by Ravi Jain’s Toronto-based Why Not Theatre, "A Brimful of Asha" has received accolades across the country and is currently on an international tour.

The play is an account of true events but, as both Asha and Ravi quickly learn, there are two sides to every story. While Ravi embraces his Canadian identity and wishes to find true love for himself, Asha is adamant that she knows best how to find him a suitable bride, going as far as to say “You don’t choose your parents or your children. Why would you want to choose your wife?”

The audience is welcomed into the Jain household from the moment they enter the theatre and, as special treat, are served mouth-watering samosas by Asha herself.

Julie Fox provides the set design while Beth Kates provides the lighting and video design. André Du Toit serves as technical director and stage manager.

A Brimful of Asha is on stage for six performances only Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Tickets are $37.10 for adults, $31.85 for seniors, and $21.10 for under 30. For bookings and information, visit sudburytheatre.ca or phone 705-674-8381, ext. 21.
