An event that raises a good chunk of the yearly operating budget for a Kenyan orphanage founded by a young Sudburian took place Feb. 21.

Organizers hoped the A Night in Africa event would raise at least $50,000 for the Zawadi la Tumaini Children's Home, which cares for 20 children.

The home was opened in 2013, thanks to the efforts of 21-year-old Jacqueline Villeneuve.

Those at the gala were garbed in colourful scarves, had their face painted, took in drumming by the Afro Madness group, followed by a dinner featuring African foods.
