The art of the decorated egg, or the pysanka, dates back to ancient times. Roma Shewciw and Marilyn Onucky Vervega have been teaching the traditional wax-resist batik method for more than 20 years at the Ukranian Seniors’ Centre in downtown Sudbury.

“Decorating the eggs is a great way to spend time with the family and talk,” said Shewciw. “Everyone walks out of here with a pysanka, and we stay until you finish.”

The annual workshop has become a kind of Easter tradition, with many Sudbury families coming out year after year to participate. Egg decorating kits and supplies are also available for sale at the centre.

Community members are invited to sign up for the beginner classes on March 7 and March 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with an advanced class option on March 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Space is limited and pre-registration is now open. The cost is $22.
