Celebrating the fabric of our lives

From the socks and coats that keep us warm, to the blankets we sleep beneath, textiles are something we use every day. They're so common that we don't pay too much attention to them.

From the socks and coats that keep us warm, to the blankets we sleep beneath, textiles are something we use every day. They're so common that we don't pay too much attention to them.

La Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario (GNO) aims to put the spotlight on these versatile materials through its P0P F0LK: T3XT1L3S exhibit, which runs March 13 until April 18.

The exhibit, featuring the work of four artists, is curated by Markstay artist Sophie Leblanc.

“I started getting really interested in textiles when I took a course in art history that examined Asian textiles,” she said.

“Then I just found it fascinating, just studying the cultural aspect of textile-making. I started thinking a lot about my grandmothers, who made quilts and knitted socks and mitts.

“Then I wanted to do something that looked at local textile traditions.”

Those who walk through GNO's doors over the next month will have a chance to look at a tent made out of socks by Danielle Gignac.

There's also QR codes knitted by Greta Grip. After documenting the shearing of four sheep, Grip knit QR codes with the wool from each sheep. If you scan the code, you can watch the sheep-shearing.

The exhibit also features a handmade quilt by Mariana Lafrance and bundles containing hemlock twigs and wrapped with wool by Judy Martin.

“I think it's an exciting show,” Leblanc said. “I really like the work of all four artists.”

An opening reception for the show takes place from 5-7 p.m. March 13. GNO, located at 174 Elgin St., is open noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and noon to 7 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is free.
