A little construction won't defeat Sue Lampinen

As the old saying goes, there's only two seasons in our city — winter and construction.

As the old saying goes, there's only two seasons in our city — winter and construction.

Artist Sue Lampinen said she's still recovering from the last construction season, when extensive roadwork just outside of her Regent Street studio impacted her business.

Things got so crazy she sometimes couldn't even get to the studio herself, let alone her customers.

“Oh, last summer was bad,” Lampinen said. “Ironically, in all my 20 years, that would be the most difficult. I'm trying to recover from that.”

But Lampinen Fine Art and Custom Framing — which opened in 1995 — is still in business, and Lampinen is in the mood to celebrate, especially since the bulk of construction is complete.

On April 11, Lampinen is holding an open house in honour of the studio's 20th anniversary. There will be refreshments, a door prize and even giveaways of some of her prints.

She's also offering unframed prints and framing for 20 per cent off during the week of April 11-18.

Most of Lampinen's work focuses on Northern Ontario nature scenes. She often leaves the comforts of her studio to head out to local lakes to create plein air (the act of creating art outdoors) pastel sketches.

Because her plein air works are created so quickly, she's able to sell them for a relatively low price.

“Come in and see what new paintings I've got, and see if your lake or area is going to be represented,” Lampinen said. “I do a lot of painting just in this local area.”

She said her favourite time of year for plein air work is winter, despite the risk of frozen fingers.

“The way the colours reflect off the white surface of the snow, it's very peaceful,” Lampinen said. “People tell me they get a really peaceful Zen feeling when they look at my winter scenes.”

Besides her own work, Lampinen runs a framing business out of her studio, and also exhibits some work by other artists.

Lampinen Fine Art and Custom Framing, located at 1350 Regent St. S. (across from the Shell Station), is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
