Game Jam at Anywhere Creator Space

This past February, Anywhere Creator Space opened its doors to the public, offering up a shared community workspace for people to bring their ideas and creative endeavours to fruition.

Located in the Northern Breweries complex, next to the developing Brewer Lofts, this common design and idea space hosts a photography studio, textiles/craft room, and a workshop for basic woodworking and building.

Membership includes use of all the amenities in the building, as well as use of and training of tools, free wi-fi, unlimited coffee and the chance to access local creatives.

In fact, those interested in video games can access and meet like-minded individuals at the Space's upcoming game jam. The international online jam, Ludum Dare, will take place over 72 hours April 17-19 — the objective being to make a game from scratch based on a to-be-determined theme.

"A lot of the time you come up with a good building block during a jam and flesh out a larger game," said Brendan Lehman, a game developer at Anywhere Creator Space.

The game jam also includes a pay-what-you-can introduction to game working workshop. Lehman will be host an intro workshop on Unity every day of the jam at noon for three hours. Each participant can walk away having created their very own game.

"We'd love to host a few more of these (game jam), and be known as a place to come spur creativity," said Lehman. "There are students at Laurentian and all kinds of local talent in the gaming community, it would be nice to be known as a space that collectively launches that kind of innovation."
