Singing has always been a hobby of Dominica Frometa's.

The third-year Laurentian University concurrent education student said she used to perform a lot at church in high school.

But no one at her job at the South End Wal-Mart, where she's worked part-time in the deli department for four years, knew about her interest in music. That is, until now.

About two weeks ago, 20-year-old Frometa saw a poster up at the store for the Wal-Mart Associate Talent Search, a talent contest open to Wal-Mart employees around the globe.

She taped herself singing Pharrell Williams' hit song “Happy,” and submitted it to the contest.

Frometa recently found out she's made the contest's top 30. She's the only Canadian to have made it this far. But to progress with the contest, she needs people to vote for her online this month.

If she receives enough votes, and makes it to the top six, she'll be able to perform at Wal-Mart's shareholders week in Bentonville, Arkansas in June.

“I'm excited,” Frometa said. “It's an honour, especially because I'm the only Canadian. That's really exciting. I just want to make everyone proud.”
