The second annual event, held at the Caruso Club, is designed to bring people back to Sudbury's Borgia Market of the 1950s. The Borgia was demolished in the 1960s to make way for what's now the Rainbow Centre Mall.

The venue took on the atmosphere of a busy market during the event, with local restaurants and businesses set up at tables decorated to resemble old-fashioned market stalls.

Participants dressed in 1950s costumes crowded around the stalls to taste their fare. The event also featured live entertainment and auctions.

“I think people like to dress up and they like to do something different,” said Health Sciences North Foundation executive director Mary-Lou Hussak. “Food, wine, beer, dressing up and having fun, what could be better?”

Last year, Taste Street raised $75,000 for Health Sciences North's Medical Simulation Laboratory. Hussak said she hoped to match last year's total, with funds going towards a new centre for medical learners and simulation.

Christine and Marc Lamoureaux, just two of hundreds of people at the event, said they enjoyed the food and looking at all of the period costumes. Most important, though, was benefitting the hospital.

“It's what everybody needs,” Marc said. “You'll always need hospitals and better care.”

Stack Brewing owner Shawn Mailloux was handing out beer samples in an old-fashioned wooden stall he built himself.

“Putting a theme to an event is fun,” he said. “As you can see, some people get into it. You've got the greasers, the jocks. It's a good way to have some fun and raise some money for the hospital.”
