After a long, cold slumber, the Encore Theatre Company shall rise again April 10 when it stages the challenging “Abraham Lincoln Goes to the Theatre."

This will be only the second time the play is presented in English, and the first time it visits Sudbury. It's being brought to the stage under the award-wining direction of Jenny Hazelton, and acting talents of Will Himsl, Rick Duthie and Daniel Aubin.

Written by Quebec playwright Larry Tremblay, "Abraham Lincoln Goes to the Theatre" takes place in a rehearsal hall/purgatory and follows the story of a narcissistic director who hires two actors to impersonate comedians Laurel and Hardy. The dirctor forces the actors to re-enact the events of Honest Abe's assassination over and over again in an intense, downward spiral of abuse and paranoia.

“It is hilarious, ironic and yet totally accurate,” said director Jenny Hazelton of the absurdist comedy.

This will be the Encore Theatre's first performance in downtown Sudbury, something that has always been its goal, said the troupe's artistic director, Callam Rodya.

“A city's vitality is demonstrated by a strong arts culture in the downtown,” he said.

"Abraham Lincoln Goes to the Theatre" will take place at the Verve, 178 Elm St., Tuesday to Friday at 8 p.m., until April 18.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors and $20 for students.

Seats are limited, so it is recommended to buy ahead at encoreabelincoln.everbite.ca.
