It's going to get hot at STC next season

In choosing the productions for Sudbury Theatre Centre's 2015-2016 season, artistic director Caleb Marshall noticed a certain theme.

In choosing the productions for Sudbury Theatre Centre's 2015-2016 season, artistic director Caleb Marshall noticed a certain theme.

Even though the plays are set anywhere from the 1770s to the modern day, they all speak strongly about the foibles of human nature — thus STC's slogan for the upcoming season, “Decades of Desire and Deception.”

“It's that desire propels us and deception that's used to meet our desires,” said Marshall, speaking at the April 16 launch of the company's next season. “That's been the human condition for decades and decades.”

STC's 2015-2016 kicks off Oct. 15-31 with Christopher Hamilton's Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

The award-winning play about the French aristocracy “tells a chilling tale of sensual decadence, corruption, and manipulation played as the ultimate game.”

The theatre company greets the Christmas season with a musical adaptation by Marshall and Michael Doherty of A Christmas Carol. The holiday classic runs Nov. 27 to Dec. 16.

There's a little something for the month of love too. Rebecca Northan's Blind Date runs Feb. 4 until Valentine's Day.

“When Mimi gets stood up at a fancy French restaurant, she decides to improvise with a randomly selected member of the audience,” the play description reads.

“What follows is the ultimate blind date: awkward, unpredictable, hilarious, and sexy, as Mimi leads her replacement on a 90-minute turn that is different each and every night.”

From March 3-12, STC presents Trina Davies' The Romeo Initiative. Billed as “a hot chapter to the Cold War,” the play features a young secretary who thinks she's found the perfect man.

“But at the Height of the Cold War, things are never really what they seem,” said the play description.

#TheWaterTower, which runs April 1-3, is a play for young audiences written by local playwrights Lara Bradley, Rick Duthie, Cora Eckert and Caitlin Heppner.

The topical production is about what happens when “a teen's provocative photo hits social media.”

Finally, from April 28 to May 3, STC presents the musical For Life by Norm Foster and Michael Doherty.

“Lizzie and Paige have been BFFs since they were little,” the play description reads. “One is the self-obsessed but likeable bridezilla, while the other is the introvert struggling to break out of her shell.

“But when the wedding is called off, their lives take a very sharp turn.”
