Sudbury Theatre Centre will draw the curtain on its 2014-2015 Mainstage Season with the Italian farce In Piazza San Domenico by Steve Galluccio beginning April 23.

From the writer of Mambo Italiano, Galluccio’s In Piazza San Domenico delivers a fast-paced comedy of errors full of jealous misunderstandings, sexy shenanigans, and, though written in English, is rife with Italian insults.

STC’s production boasts a cast filled with many recognizable local talents.

The play takes us to 1950s Naples, Italy, where Carmelina (Sophia Fabiilli) witnesses her fiancé Guido (Sudbury’s Steven Pigozzo) kissing the local Vespa, Mafalda (Tracey Beltrano) in the town square.

Thrown into a jealous rage, Carmelina breaks off the engagement and throws herself at the inept mama’s boy Severino (Sudbury’s Alessandro Costantini) to exact revenge.

Meanwhile, Guido believes Carmelina is in fact having an affair with his best friend Tonino (Phil Luzi) and so sets out on his own vengeful campaign to seduce Tonino’s shrewish wife, Marisa (Toni Ellwand).

A further layer of hilarity unfolds as Carmelina’s widowed mother Isabella (Sudbury’s Sandra Battaglini) is relentlessly pursued by feeble-minded fig vendor Pasquale (Sudbury’s Ron Tough).

It all makes for a ridiculous modern homage to the classic farce of Molière and the
physical humour of commedia dell’arte, and is sure to be a comedy feast.

Artistic director Caleb Marshall helms the production, his third this season.

Frequent STC collaborator Geoffrey Dinwiddie contributes the majestic piazza set on which the play unfolds. Simon Rossiter makes his STC debut as the lighting designer.

Brandon Kleiman returns as the costume designer, his second STC production of the season.

"In Piazza San Domenico" runs from April 23 to May 15. Performances are nightly at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays. The theatre is dark Mondays.
