May 4 is an unofficial secular holiday that celebrates the Star Wars movies.

The date even has its own punny slogan chosen for traditional Jedi greeting, “May the Force be with you.” In a play on today's date, May 4, the official slogan of this unofficial holiday is “May the fourth be with you.”

Jedi knights, of course, are the magic-wielding, light-sabre battling heroes of the Star Wars movie franchise.

Even though the holiday was not actually created or declared by Lucasfilm, they still choose to embrace it annually.

Apocryphally, the reference was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as prime minister of the United Kingdom, according to the Wikipedia entry on the day.

Her political party, the Conservatives, placed a congratulatory newspaper advertisement saying "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations."

May the fourth be with you!
