If you're not a fan of Green Day, but you enjoy theatre, you'll still enjoy it, said YES Theatre artistic director Alessandro Costantini.

“If you don't like Green Day, or you don't even like theatre, it's still going to be a visceral experience. It triggers many of your senses, and it's going to be a really intense experience you aren't really going to get in Sudbury often.”

The high-octane musical tells the tale of Johnny, Tunny and Will, all of whom struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. It hits the Grand Nightclub on June 5.

The electric-rock musical from Green Day delves into the lives of the three disgruntled men, who flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life. Their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called back home to attend familial responsibilities and Johnny's attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship.

The production includes every song from Green Day's album “American Idiot,” as well as several songs from follow-up release, “21st Century Breakdown."

“It's a very unconventional Broadway musical,” Costantini said. “There are no warmups, it kind of just kicks you in the face right from the start.”

The production takes place in one of Sudbury's most historic theatre, he said.

“I saw this space a few years ago, and since then I've wanted to do a show here, but I wanted to find the right one,” he said. “'American Idiot' really works, because the show is so much about these young people trying to fill something, and this is a large space that we can fill with our voices. It really works, and I think this venue was really thirsty for live music again.”

Tickets are $35 for adults, and $25 for students/seniors (plus applicable taxes and surcharges) and are available now online at www.yestheatre.com.
