The FSP Pride Prom, set to take place starting at 7:30 p.m. July 24 at Sudbury Theatre Centre, is for LGBT youth and allied friends aged 21 and under. Drag performer Miss Fluffy Soufflé will host and DJ the event.

The youth are allowed to wear whatever they want and invite whomever they wish, and are even able to nominate peers as prom king, queen and ace.

“Instead of them being on the fringe of prom, if they are even allowed to go, they're going to be the belles of the ball,” said Fierté Sudbury Pride vice-chairperson Kelly Perras.

“They're going to be the stars. It's going to be 100 per cent about them.”

Fierté Sudbury Pride Week, set to take place July 17-26, features 16 events — everything from the aforementioned prom to a movie night to an awards ceremony to the traditional pride parade.

“We have a fantastic lineup,” Perras said. “We have really, really quality speakers, really quality events. We've really poured a lot of heart and soul into making this a very exciting season for Fierté Sudbury Pride.”

Perras emphasizes Fierté Sudbury Pride isn't just for the LGBT community — all supportive people are welcome.

“Pride festivals are really for the people outside of the queer community,” she said. “It's for everyone else to join us and to meet us, and to see it's my neighbour, my dentist, the person who works at the coffee shop.”
