Go on a bender at Stack Brewing

The list of activities associated with beer drinking has long been one that includes actions that are low-impact, low-exertion and maybe even low-brow.

Beer-related activities usually include sitting on a deck or patio, perhaps a game of cards or horseshoes if you're into standing up, but more often than not, beer doesn't pair with the word fitness all too often.

Enter a new partnership between two Sudbury businesses, ARC Climbing Yoga Fitness and Stack Brewing.

The two have joined forces to host “Bends and Brews”, a trend that pairs yoga with beer that has been growing in popularity south of the boarder.

ARC will have a yoga instructor on site at the Stack brewery (1350 Kelly Lake Rd.) on Aug. 30 for a yoga class that will be followed by beer sampling and a brewery tour.

“I've read articles in yoga journals about these types of partnerships between craft breweries and yoga studios, but it's mainly happening in the United States,” said Laura Schmidt, manager of programming and sales with ARC.

“We reached out to the guys at Stack to see if they'd be interested and they were on board with it.”

The class will cost $20 and includes a one-hour yoga class, followed by two beer samples from Stack Brewing and a brewery tour.

For the guys at the brewery this comes at a very busy time of the year as they will be in Toronto at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) for a three day craft beer festival.

“We're stretched pretty thin with the CNE happening on the same weekend, but we'll make it work and we'll make sure we have staff up here for this event,” said Shawn Mailloux, owner, Stack Brewing.

The brewery can comforably host a class of 20 people, and spots sold out within 24-hours of the event being announced, according to Schmidt.

“If the weather forecast looks like it's going to be nice for the weekend we'll open up a few more spots and make space outside to do the class,” said Schmidt.

Spaces are still limited however and those interested in participatng can contact ARC to get on the waiting list.

While the pairing of yoga and beer may seem out in left field to some, both Schmidt and Mailloux agree that the partnership between the two businesses is a of great benefit to both.

“One of the things that I really like about this pairing is that a lot of the registrations we have are people that have never been to ARC before or never taken a yoga class,” said Schmidt.

“I think it's a nice way for people who wouldn't have otherwise explored yoga to go head out and try it. When people think of yoga they think it has to be taken so seriously and that it's very anatomical and very rigid, but you don't have to be a vegan to practice yoga, it's for everybody, so if you like to enjoy your beer it doesn't mean that you can't also enjoy being healthy or being fit through a yoga class.”

Mailloux and the guys at Stack are already involved in similar partnerships as they have been running monthly mountain bike rides with the Walden Mountain Bike Club, and Mailloux understands the value of cross-promoting.

“They (ARC) might have clients that don't know about us and we might have clients that don't know about them, so hopefully this works out for the best,” said Mailloux.

Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat and a valid piece of photo ID. The yoga class will get underway at 1 p.m. on Aug. 30.
