Artists on Elgin is exhibiting artist Gary Moratz's work for the month of September.

Moratz works with stone, concrete and stained glass making striking and colourful mosaics. His work is perfect for garden decorations or window hanging.

His inspiration comes from the rugged Northern Ontario landscape with its rocky shorelines covered by hearty pine trees. Moratz finds this tranquil setting is sharply contrasted by the close proximity of the hustle and bustle of urban life.

“I am intrigued by the combinations of patterns, colours and textures of what I see around me,” he said, in a press release.

“Once I choose a subject, I select the materials to best portray it. I like to experiment by integrating metal, tile, glass and stone materials into my artwork. My designs include concrete table tops with flowers and leaves, a concrete garden stone cityscape, and a glass and tile lizard on a canoe paddle.”

Moratz’s work will be accompanied by pottery birdhouses made by other member artists Muiriel Checkeris and Maggie Nardi. It is the perfect show to say a fond farewell to summer.

An opening reception takes place at Artists on Elgin from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 3.

Artists on Elgin is located at 168 Elgin Street, and is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
