Cinéfest Sudbury has announced this year’s selection of some of the most diverse indie films in Canadian cinema at the 2015 edition of the Festival. One film is focused on a subject matter that couldn't be much more timely, and that is bears.

Two films that will be screened this year are The Boy and the Beast, and Terre des ours.

The Boy and the Beast (Bakemono no ko)[Mamoru Hosoda, Japan, 2014]
Jonah (Jonas Chernick) is unemployed, his girlfriend just dumped him, and he owes a substantial gambling debt to the local bookie. Aurora (Joey King), Jonah’s pot-smoking daughter, has problems of her own.

Her vision disorder is getting worse and she’s losing patience for her apathetic single father, who disappoints at every turn.

When Aurora’s optometrist tells Jonah that his daughter is losing what’s left of her vision and that she’ll soon be completely blind, Jonah drags Aurora on a dangerous road trip north to Churchill, Manitoba.

He’s determined to show her the most beautiful sight he’s ever seen in his life—the magnificent Northern Lights—before she loses her vision completely.

Terre des ours[Guillaume Vincent, France, 2014]
Set in the wilderness of the Kamchatka Peninsula, the land of legends and the kingdom of wild brown bears, we follow the daily adventures of five wild brown bears.

A mother bear and her two young ones, an adolescent male and an experienced male leader. Each of them have their own concerns and preoccupations. The mother must feed and protect her cubs, whilst all they want is to explore the big wide world out there, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead of them.

The adolescent is coming of age and must find his place in the adult world, whereas the experienced male must constantly defend his supremacy and impose his strength. Terre des ours is narrated by Marion Cotillard.

All Indie-Can film presentation screenings will take place at SilverCity Sudbury, located at 355 Barrydowne Road.

The 27th edition of Cinéfest Sudbury runs from Sept. 19 – 27, 2015.
