A large crowd gathered at the New Sudbury Centre parking lot on Aug. 29 for Sudbury's first ever mascot beauty contest.

A pararde of 12 mascots made their way down an impromptu runway to show off their charisma and style in hopes of impressing an esteemed panel of judges.

Among the competitors were Sudbury mainstays like SudBerry Bear and Sudbrina, as well as Sudbury Wolves mascot, Howler.

Perhaps the grandest entrance belonged to Greater Sudbury Fire Services mascot Nick, who was welcomed by a fire siren and at 10 feet tall towered over the rest of his competition.

The four finalists as determined by the judging panel were, A&W Root Bear, Burnie (Cambrian College), Nick, and Howler.

The final four were then judged by audience applause and in the end it was the A&W Root Bear's infectious dancing that won the crowd over and won him the title of champion in the first ever mascot beauty contest.

A first place sash was presented to the bear and he will ride in a convertible tomorrow afternoon with Mayor Brian Bigger, in celebration of the mayor's birthday.
