Wear your hockey jersey to Movie Night Under the Stars

While the Movie Night Under the Stars series has typically featured 1980s and 1990s blockbuster feature films — along with local shorts — during the Sept. 4 version of the event, a northern-shot movie takes the feature slot.

While the Movie Night Under the Stars series has typically featured 1980s and 1990s blockbuster feature films — along with local shorts — during the Sept. 4 version of the event, a northern-shot movie takes the feature slot.

"Skating to New York," directed by Charles Minsky and starring Connor Jessup (Closet Monster), was filmed in Northern Ontario in Temiskaming Shores.

It tells the exciting coming-of-age story of five teenage boys who leave their small, Canadian town behind and risk skating across Lake Ontario to New York on the coldest day of the year.

The event is being presented this time by Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival and Launch Pad Marketing, and takes place in conjunction with Downtown Sudbury Ribfest.

The film is rated PG for mild language and mature themes. The film will be played on a large blow-up screen and moviegoers are asked to bring their own seating to ensure they are comfortable.

The fun starts at 8:30 pm with Sudbury Trivia Night — test your Northern Ontario film knowledge against the crowd.

Before the movie, Cinéfest Sudbury will screen the short film "Cataract," shot in Northern Ontario. Directed and starring Sudburian Greg Zenha, "Cataract" was an official selection at the 2012 edition of Cinéfest Sudbury.

Program Books and film schedules for the 27th edition of the festival will be available at the outdoor screening.

Patrons of the Downtown Ribfest are encouraged to attend this free outdoor screening. There will be popcorn and refreshments on site. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favourite hockey jersey, warm clothing and blankets in case of colder weather during the presentation.

The 27th edition of Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival runs Sept. 19-27.
