In late 2013 and early 2014, local band The Puckhogs made a run at the CBC Hockey Night in Canada Song Quest contest, ultimately coming in second.

The group — made up of Greater Sudbury musicians Sean Barrette, Chris Leblanc and Brent Wohlberg — then made its song, "For the Love of the Game," available for download on Bandcamp for $1.

The musicians were hoping to use the song to raise $5,000 for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program to help local kids in need join organized sports programs.

The funds will be distributed through The Human League Association of Sudbury.

But nearly two years later, the song has only raised about 10 per cent of its goal, or about $500.

After learning about the 200 kids in August alone who applied to the Human League for assistance to play sports, the band decided to try for more donations this month before handing over the funds to charity.

“We thought, let's not let the money sit there in a PayPal account if we can put some skates on a kid today,” said Barrette, adding that he hopes the band can get to 20 or 25 per cent of its fundraising goal.
