Double shot of horror flicks on Halloween night

If you're looking for something completely different to do this Halloween weekend, why not make it a date night on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Sudbury Secondary School's Sheridan Auditorium.

The Sudbury Downtown Indie Cinema Co-op is presenting: The Best in International and Local Horror Films featuring The Babadook from Australia and When Animals Dream from Denmark as a double bill on the Saturday night.

The first screening starts at 7 p.m. followed by a 9 p.m. screening. After intermission, Sudbury’s poet laureate Tom Leduc will entertain with Zombie Poetry.

The Babadook is a psychological thriller in the tradition of Polanski’s classic domestic horrors (Rosemary’s Baby, The Tenant, Repulsion).

The Babadook, a first feature for Jennifer Kent, premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January 2014 to rave reviews and international sales.

Time Out New York gave the film five stars and says "There goes your peaceful night's sleep" and Variety calls it "Deeply disturbing and unusually beautiful."

When Animals Dream is a film from Denmark directed by Jonas Alexander Arnby. The film tells the story of 16-year old Marie who lives on a small island with her seriously ill mother and her father, who takes care of the family.

But suddenly mysterious deaths happen and Marie can feel something strange happening to her body.

The film was nominated for three awards at the 2014 Cannes Films Festival and was also nominated for an Audience Award at the 2015 Glasgow Film Festival.

On Sunday, Nov. 1 starting at 1 p.m., the Indie Cinema will also be screening a series of Northern Ontario horror shorts from the Best of Northern Frights.

Advance tickets for the double bill on Oct. 31 are $20 and for the Northern Frights short film festival on Nov. 1 are just $8.
