Hide your cheeseburgers: Trailer Park Boys back for LOL

What do petty crimes, a vindictive trailer park supervisor, a shed with many cats, cheeseburgers and a pot-bellied man with a fondness for going shirtless have in common? Yes, you guessed it right: The Trailer Park Boys.

What do petty crimes, a vindictive trailer park supervisor, a shed with many cats, cheeseburgers and a pot-bellied man with a fondness for going shirtless have in common? Yes, you guessed it right: The Trailer Park Boys.

Good news for Sudbury fans of the show — the red neck comedians are coming back to town to headline the 2016 edition of the Laugh Out Loud Sudbury Comedy Festival as part of their Still Drunk, High and Unemployed Tour.

The comedy festival, which runs Feb. 4-8, is now a decade old. The Trailer Park Boys, who will perform Feb. 5, also headlined the first edition of the Laugh Out Loud Sudbury Comedy Festival.

Tammy Frick, the festival's associate executive director, said The Trailer Park Boys created quite a stir in town during their first appearance at the festival 10 years ago, with their show selling out within days.

“We're really excited to welcome them back,” said Frick, who spoke to NorthernLife.ca after the festival's Nov. 25 lineup release.

When the Laugh Out Loud Sudbury Comedy Festival launched, organizers weren't sure if it would succeed. But it's grown steadily, with mainstage shows now being held at the Sudbury Arena, Frick said.

“We thought the community would embrace it, we thought it was a great idea,” she said. “But it feels so great when you see the number of people coming out, the amount of support it's received over the years, and how it's grown so quickly.”

With the festival's 10th anniversary, organizers stepped things up a bit. This year, there's three headliners, up from the usual two. Other headliners at the 2016 festival are Craig Ferguson and Jeremy Hotz.

Many might remember Ferguson, who headlines the festival Feb. 6, from his role on “The Drew Carey Show,” where he played Carey's boss, Nigel Wick, from 1996 to 2003.

The Scottish comic was also the host of CBS' “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” for 10 years, a show that set all-time viewer records and earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination during its run.

Hotz — a Canadian stand-up — takes the stage Feb. 8. One of the most unique stand-up comics working today, Hotz has quickly become a proven international success.

With stellar performances at the Montreal Comedy Festival: Just For Laughs and his sold-out Canadian theatre tour "What A Miserable Tour This Is....”, as well as performances all over the United States, Europe and Australia, Hotz continues to grab audiences with his confused, yet astute, observational comedy.

Frick said she hopes the headliners' eclectic mix of comedy styles provide something appealing to every comedy fans.

As a bonus, the festival is bringing The Comic Strippers to The Grand Nightclub for a matinee show Feb. 7. A fictitious male stripper troupe (played by a cast of some of Canada’s best improvisational comedians), The Comic Strippers always perform a "sexylarious" improv comedy show. These guys try to be sexy, it just comes out funny.

Constantly grooving and gyrating in between scenes, they banter with the crowd and perform their hilarious twist on improv sketches. They sing, they “dance.” These guys are oiled up and ready to make you laugh at them.

Please note this show is for adult audiences only.

The Laugh Out Loud Sudbury Comedy Festival also features a series of club shows, with six comics from across North America performing each evening. The venue is The Durham Social, newly renovated after a devastating fire.

Tickets go on sale Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. at the Sudbury Arena Box Office. For ticket prices, showtimes and other information, visit lolsudbury.com.

A couple of years ago when Mr. Lahey (John Dunsworth) and Randy (Patrick Roach) came to the city for a show, NorthernLife.ca challenged them to a cheeseburger eating contest. Check the video above of former Northern Life entertainment reporter Jenny Jelen taking on Randy and his infamous belly.
