Jarret Martin is a hockey star, but only when it comes to the series of NHL video games developed by EA Sports.

“I've been playing it my whole life,” said Martin, an apprentice welder. “Pretty much everybody we know, we all play each other online all the time.”

Martin and his buddy Brandon Langella, a Cambrian College police foundations student, have taken their love of the video game and turned it into a fundraiser for Toronto's SickKids Hospital.

The Playing for a Cause NHL 16 tournament takes place from 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. Feb. 21 at Overtime Sports Bar on Notre Dame Avenue.

The event, featuring a chance to win a $500 cash prize, as well as other prizes and giveaways, is open to 32 teams of two. People have the choice of competing on either PS4 or XBox.

Entry costs $50 a team, and participants must be at least 19 years old. Martin said there's still a few spots open.

SickKids is a cause near and dear to Martin's heart.

His four-year-old nephew, Liam, has Angelman syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe intellectual and developmental disability. The little boy has been frequently treated at SickKids.

To register for the event, phone Martin at 705-923-8567.
