Conservation Sudbury will be hosting their fourth annual Friends and Family Ice Fishing Day on Feb. 14.

The event will be held at the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area Nature Chalet (2309 South Bay Rd.) from noon – 4 p.m.

That weekend is an Ontario Family Fishing weekend, so no fishing licenses are required.

Ice fishing activities will include learning proper catch and release techniques and making your own ice fishing rod from a stick.

Ice augers, gear and free bait will be available courtesy of our partners, the OFAH Tackleshare program, Ramakko’s and the Sudbury Game and Fish Protective Association.

Round out the day with building a snowman or sculpture on the lake, or going for a snowshoe out on the ice or on the trails – snowshoes and maps will be available for free.

Warm up at any time at the Nature Chalet or by our outdoor fire and enjoy complimentary hot beverages. All ages are welcome.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is reminding those who choose to take part in ice fishing this weekend to take care and exercise caution.

Anglers are encouraged to stay safe on the ice when venturing out:

Check ice conditions with local ice hut operators or other anglers. At least 10 cm (four inches) of clear blue ice is required to walk on, 20 cm (eight inches) for snowmobiles and 30 cm (12 inches) or more is needed for most light vehicles. This thickness should be doubled if the ice is white or opaque.

Let others know where you’re planning to fish and when you plan to return.

Appropriate clothing and equipment are critical to safety and comfort. Many anglers wear flotation suits and carry a set of ice picks.

No registration is required – drop in any time. For more info, call (705) 674-8904 or email [email protected].
