The Bell Park walkway along Ramsey Lake will now be known as the Jim Gordon Boardwalk.

The Bell Park walkway, a popular addition to city life, has been renamed to honour retiring Mayor Jim Gordon.
Jim Marchbank, CEO at Science North, made the announcement Friday night at a gala dinner to honour the retiring mayor.

Gordon served as mayor of the City of Sudbury from 1976 to 1981, when he was elected the PC MP for Sudbury Riding. He returned to local politics in 1991 when he defeated three-term mayor Peter Wong. In November 2000, Gordon was elected the first mayor of the City of Greater Sudbury.

Although Gordon spent 40 years in public service, he was also a popular English teacher.

Gordon?s wife, Donna, his six daughters, his sons-in-law and his grandchildren attended the party, hosted by the Rotary Club at the Caruso Club.

About 600 people attended the event.

Councillor Ted Callaghan called Gordon his mentor and friend. He said Gordon will be remembered for being a mayor who could make things happen.

He presented Gordon with the first Order of Sudbury award. The new award will recognize the contributions of outstanding citizens.

The cost of the Jim Gordon Boardwalk, which joins Bell Park with Science North was shared by the city and the science centre. It was completed during Gordon?s time as mayor of the City of Sudbury.
