As many as 30,000 people are expected to attend the Sudbury Secondary School's 100th anniversary reunion. So organizers are giving former students and teachers a lot of advance notice.

A news conference was held earlier this week to announce plans for the reunion. Old class jackets adorned the walls and the tables were lined with brochures of reunions past as reunion board members announced that Sudbury Secondary School will host its 100th anniversary reunion  from July 31 to Aug. 3, 2008.

“We are calling on all alumni and staff of Sudbury Mining and Technical School, Sudbury High School, Sheridan Technical School and Sudbury Secondary School to join us for this historic event,” said reunion chair Paul Soucie.

The organizers have set up a website: www.SSSReunion2008.com.

Former students can access information from the site, as well as get in touch with old friends, chat and upload pictures.

The site will also be used for finding volunteers and inputing suggestions for the event.

“Any students with ideas are encouraged to submit them through the website,” said Soucie.

Activities already on the itinerary are a teachers' banquet, a wine and cheese reception, an alumni banquet, a day of golf, an ecumenical service and what could turn out to be the largest school dance in the school's history.

The last reunion was held in 1983 to celebrate the 75th anniversary.

“More than 30,000 people attended the 75th reunion from all parts of Canada and the United States,” said Soucie.

“Some former students came from as far away as Europe and Australia and we certainly hope they will be encouraged to join us once again.”

Community members are also being invited to join alumni and staff at the reunion.

About 50,000 people have graduated from this site since the first high school classes were held in a rented building at the corner of St. Anne's Road and Durham St.

Alumni and staff can begin registering for the Civic Holiday Weekend reunion starting in October.
