Everyone likes a roof over their heads, especially concert-goers.

That's the message city council gave to staff at a council meeting on Nov.25.

“I was concerned that the city would just forget about (the roof).” said Frances Caldarelli. The Ward 10 councillor presented a motion aiming to roof the new Grace Hartman Amphitheatre, which is being built in Bell Park.

“I understand that we're pressed for money, but  ... there are places you can look, and I just want to give (staff) that little push to do that.”

The motion, passed unanimously by council, states “council wants the new Grace Hartman Amphitheatre to be everything it can be to the citizens who will use it.”

The motion directs city staff to “prepare a report showing how a roof can be placed on the Amphitheatre within the next three years.” Also, “that staff investigate how this work can be undertaken using reserves, capital funds, grants from other levels of government or community fund raising.”

The estimated price tag for said roof is $2.5 million, according to a presentation made by city staff to council. The roof would not be included in the $5 million for the project, as it would push the city over that limit.

The realization that building a roof on the amphitheatre would take council over budget on the project came as no surprise to Callaghan.

“I knew, quite frankly, that it couldn't be built for five million dollars, doing it right.”

Doing it right includes building it with a canopy, Callaghan said.

“I believe council made the right decision tonight. If we're going to do this and we're going to move forward then let's do it right and put the canopy on it and do it as soon as we possibly can.”

City staff and council also mulled over the idea of adding an additional 400 hard seats to the design of the amphitheatre, at an estimated cost of $350,000.

Currently, the design seats 1,750, (500 of which are hard seats, the rest being grass or soft seating).

The old amphitheatre had roughly the same capacity, according to architect Dennis Castellan, who is part of the architectural firm heading up the project.

  • PMs......One should examine oneself for a very long time before thinking of condemning others. Its difficult to think much of someone who is not wiser today than they were yesterday. When I apologized to Bill for my mistake....Don't you think I researched who the mayor of Sudbury was in 1967? I can't recall Silverman because he was before I was born but I do recall Joe Fabbro probably because I had a chance to go into his office when I was very very young. I was very impressed as a young boy. Thanks to Bill for correcting me again. Is there something about the Sudbury food bank I said that you dont agree with? Or about any other matters in the city...ie Sudbury Utilities and the ridicolous mismanagement and high water rates we all pay? Or the Sudbury Housing Corporation? Never underestimate the power of the irate customer. As for interviewing Ms Hartman...why don't we interview some CAS staff and management....seems they're just as accessable. Should your comment be a result of Tourette syndrome, I apologize to you too PMs.

  • Well MAX, if you do see her at the food bank, or anywhere in the city for that matter, do interview her and take some photos.
Grace Hartman has been dead since 1998.

  • Hi Bill... Please accept my humble apology. I was "skimmy" an old blog a few weeks ago and obviously made a mistake. I;m sorry. I think thats a great name for the new theatre.

  • Hey Max. What are you talking about? I'll give you a short history lesson.Grace Hartman was the Mayor of Sudbury in 1967 after Silverman and before Fabbro.Have you ever thought they might be naming it for her contribution to the city.I'm not sure if she left money in her will to pay for future developments like the roof. Please do some research before posting comments.

  • Oh and curran...I think changing the name to the Grace Hartman theatre was a stupid idea...but some can see through your pathetic stratagies....The name "hartman" has been used by city council in the news and name change to familiarize the public when Ms Hartman runs for political office...its called planning ahead. I dont recall Ms Hartman being spotted at the foodbank lately...so if the name should remain changed...she should at least pay for part of the roof? To me it will always be known as the BELL PARK THEATRE.

  • What does the CAS have to do with the amphitheatre MAXI? The CAS comes up a lot in your rants hmmmmm. Do tell ---

  • curran "are the ones who appreciate change for the better". You apprecieate change? Like more accountability? How hypocritical...seems you define change as continuing on the the same path of irresponsible spending. Let me ask you...do tou think changes to CAS is for the better? Seems the only change you want is for bloogeres to stop exposing government....Then trying to get peoples mind off tax hikes? You are pathetic...that will never happen ... not as long as you clowns in city hall are exposed. So tell me curran... was 3 million the lost bid? How many bids were recieved? Hetcor not once did the city do anything right...Honest people don't hide their deeds. Honest people are never touchy about the matter of being trusted or changing the status quo for the benefit of people and their families.. With the new roof so much for outdoor concerts...now in favour of the city...with the enclosed struture...they can now charge admissions to once free events....I think that what curran means by "moving forward".

  • I have an idea ......FIX THE ROADS !!!!!!

  • I'm not against Sudbury moving foreward. It's my tax dollars and the waste of taxpayers money I'm concerned with. Build the amphitheatre but fofget the roof. It will only be used maybe 4-5 month a year. Do you need buildings with bathrooms or hallways caked with marble? I can imagine what's in the new hospital and maybe why it cost what it did. On water rates I'm on the understanding the province is considering subsidizing water rates to cities but haven't decided when. Sudbury supposedly jumped the gun and is charging everyone the rates without the subsidies and every other city isn't doing it and thats why their rates are so much cheaper. Taxes, water rates, utilities are starting to kill people. In one paper it was estimated the HST will add an additional cost of $2000. annually to a two family home. Yet we will be given $1000. of our own money to defray costs. Bribery or not???

  • Where else does the money come from to pay for city spending?

  • Well at least I can make you laugh, losinghope. Now if I could just do something to get your mind off of taxes, taxes, taxes.

  • Oh curran, you make me laugh! You think that just because I'm not for this ridiculous spend by city council that I don't appreciate change or that I'm a lazy buggar that just sit on my a$$ all day. I do agree that this city really needs to do something to make it more appealing but city coucil really needs to get a handle on their spending and their budget. Lower property taxes would be more appealing to more people.

  • I agree, Hector. Hopefully this is one of many steps forward for Sudbury. People who are OUT and ACTIVE in this city, are the ones who appreciate change for the better.

  • How is having a roof on an amphitheatre moving forward? Please explain this to me Hector.

I am not against this city moving forward. What I am against is how the city just spends, spends, spends taxpayers dollars. Don't have enough to spend?? Just increase taxes again! Its a wonder anyone can afford to live here!

  • For once City Council is doing something right. Build this WITH a roof. When it is all done, people will be really grateful that this decision was made. I can't believe how many people here just don't want to move forward.

  • Maybe this city coucil should go visit Sault Ste. Marie's city coucil for a while and get some tips.

SSM has a designated truck route so the transports aren't ruining every road. SSM doesn't have a pothole problem or a road problem. Housing prices are significantly lower (I'm guessing because of lower property taxes). Taxpayers money actually goes to useful things (not a roof 2.5 million roof). Just to name a few things.

  • “council wants the new Grace Hartman Amphitheatre to be everything it can be to the citizens who will use it.”.......Council...DO YOU KNOW YOUR PRIORITIES?? Its what Sudbury citizens want...and thats a zero tax increase and lower water rates. Sudburians are being ripped off at the tap compared to what the rest of the country pays for water. We can thank the board over at Sudbury Utilities for the mismanagement of our city's water utility. A roof at a beach facility? Yes thats what we all want.

  • Add MORE seating, the ONLY area that 'needs' the roof is the stage area (to keep equipment/wires out of the rain)

If it rains concert-goers can always bring their own "roof" (it's called an umbrella!)
